Kigali 10.11.09, 159 patients (70, 3%) have finished treatment. No severe cases have been reported, and all confirmed cases continue to show mild symptoms.
As of November 8, 2009, thirty four (34) new confirmed cases have been reported. The new confirmed cases are from Musanze, Muhanga, Rubavu and Rusizi districts.
Individuals are advised;
- To cover their mouths and nose while coughing or sneezing,
- To wash hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis
- To seek medical attention if they develop severe symptoms of influenza-like illness, they should seek treatment to the nearest health facility
- To keep the sick person away from other people as much as possible especially others who are at high risk for complications from influenza(people with chronic respiratory diseases, children and pregnant women)
- The sick person should not have visitors other than caregivers. A phone call is safer than a visit.
- To throw away tissues and other disposable items used by the sick person in the trash. Wash your hands after touching used tissues and similar waste.
- Keep the sick person in a room separate from the common areas of the house. Sick people or people with influenza like symptoms should stay at home, sick children should not be allowed to play freely with other children or go to public places like churches, schools, children entertainment venues, and parties.
The Ministry of Health, through TRAC Plus, the National Reference Laboratory and other institutions, is monitoring the situation closely and continues to work on improving the emergency preparedness capacity and surveillance. Institutions like schools, Military camps and prisons should take caution and report any suspected cases.
